Betts Murray - Flutist
Betts started playing the flute in 3rd grade thanks to the Dartmouth, MA school system. She still has that 3rd grade flute (in case of rain?) but her husband Wisner gave her a new one 15 years ago. She recently moved from Cohasset to a family home in South Dartmouth where she can hear the DHS marching band practice from home - and they practice a lot! She is pleased that the strong music program in the Dartmouth schools continues today.
Despite the move, she vows to stay in the Rusty Skipper Band as long as the band will have her. She said, “Since I’m a founding member, I figure they can’t kick me out, right?” She is grateful for the really good and encouraging flute players in the band and for the existence of Flute 2 parts.
Her most exciting times playing the flute included playing in the skating band at Brown University hockey games. They did a maneuver called “The Move” which involved turning and skating back against the tide of musicians rocking on their skates and holding on to whatever could steady themselves. She was playing collegiate ice hockey at the time and knew how to skate, but many others were, let’s just say, putting instruments and lives at risk!
She’s happy that the Rusty Skipper Band has grown and thrived since the founding in 1995, and appreciates Music Director Steve B and the enthusiasm of so many good members!
